Welcome back to Angling Articles. A bi-weekly newsletter exclusive to our SummitTackle Community, where we discuss everything fishing. Let's have a catch up with team member Sam who's been smashing it out on the water recently.

Sam Walton- Team SummitTackle

A great start to Spring for SummitTackle UK angler Sam Walton!

"It’s been a tough few months for me as I had major knee surgery late in 2024 which resulted in me not being able to fish for a few months. That was hard for me as even in the winter I like to get out on the bank as often as possible. Around February this year I managed to start getting a few nights back fishing at local canals and a wild local low stocked pit. These are tricky waters at the best of times and the going was tough. Into late March/early April and with my knee feeling stronger the first carp of the year hit the net. I avoid commercial fisheries and try and pit my angling knowledge against wild carp where the thrill of catching the unknown keeps the buzz of carp fishing alive.

Fishing a very weedy Midlands water park saw the start of my spring captures. Due to the significant amount of weed my approach was naked chod rigs. Predominantly I’ve been using SummitTackle's single bank sticks as I like to keep mobile. I have also used to great effect the 3 rod buzz bars as well as the new fantastic Premier Aluminium POD Kit.

More time spent between the water park and a local low stock pit saw more carp landed. Recently I managed a 48 hr session in the Nene Valley with my dad. These trips are always special as he introduced me to angling. Fishing on a new lake is always tough. Tactics, areas to fish, bait choice is always challenging on any new water. The lake was full of weed, so I chose to fish naked chods as I wasn’t 100% confident on any cleanish area alongside a sporadic little and often throwing stick baiting approach. I personally believe you should always use what you feel confident in on any new water, there is no need to try new things just because its a ‘new’ lake. Fish how you know and if you're finding it challenging after this period then try new things but always start with what you know first. I am always cautious when doing short trips using the spod mostly due to the disturbance and if needing to quickly move area. I managed to catch a beautiful common and am looking toward to returning to the lake later this year as it was stunning and felt like real carp fishing to us both.

I start on new Shropshire Estate Lake ticket in June which I am really looking forward to and will also be heading to France with some close friends so I will hopefully be reporting back with some further tales of fantastic times, memories and captures on the bank.

Spring has so far been kind putting 16 fish on the bank including some stunning old warriors. A huge thank you to SummitTackle for their ongoing support. SummitTackle's British engineered bank wear is the best in its class and has never let me down."
