Session Report: New Peg, Night Ops, and the Carp That Laughed at Me
A fresh update from my latest adventure with the Summit Tackle setup. This time I ventured to the far tail of the pond—the zone where a few proper chunks had recently been banked. The peg was new to me, but it looked so promising I half expected a carp to jump straight onto the mat out of politeness.
Rods set, everything lined up neatly (because Summit gear demands at least a minimum level of tidiness), and the first take arrived in the dead of night. Whatever I hooked clearly hadn’t read the script. It bolted straight into the neighbouring peg, wrapped me around every piece of driftwood available, and left me with no choice but to launch a full amphibious rescue mission.
I crawled out of the reeds in the next peg looking like I’d fallen into the lake, lost a fight with a swamp, and then been politely rolled back in again. Boots squelching, rod tip lonely, rig missing. If anyone had witnessed it, I’d be a meme by now.
At 4 a.m., another bite. This time a cheeky little 5 kg carp came in, probably just checking on my wellbeing after the night’s performance. I slipped him back quickly without photos and told him to send his grandpa. Spoiler: he did not.
The afternoon brought one more half-hearted tap that fizzled out faster than my enthusiasm for drying soggy clothes. After that, silence. Proper silence. I blamed the changing pressure—Chapter 17 of the famously unwritten book 1000 and 1 Reasons Why It Doesn’t Bite.
One day, I’ll master carp fishing like the experts in the magazines. For now, I’m perfectly happy enjoying the atmosphere, gaining “character-building experiences,” and collecting photos that make me look like I know what I’m doing. And honestly? That’s half the fun.
